 Roland Barthes' Theory of Semiotics


  The movie is based on the first to the Hunger Games franchise with the main character going on stage with the side character. The main character has a major outfit change that gas deep subtext linking back to themes of innocence and drastic change in one's life. This assignment helped us understand how Roland Barthes theory of semiotics. The scene that was used to show the power dynamic between Katniss and the high ups, showed how they glorified the violence of the lower class for entertainment of those who are seen as higher in society. The director of Hunger Games Catching fire knew what elements of color and literal elements to show significant change in one person when out under stress, the costume director also knew which path would be the best to show this revelation- i.e., the dress. The white dress was to show Katniss losing her purity and innocence with the change of fire showing the pressure and death she went through she was reborn from the flames with a black dress. The audience switching from being for the games to against the games at the revelation of a child being at risk on live television was enough to trigger the downfall of support for the hunger games.
